How much does it cost?
Tutoring is free. Books are also free, but students are asked to make a donation to our Book Fund, if able.
When can I start?
You may work in our computer lab as soon as orientation and testing are complete. You will be on a waiting list until we can match you with a volunteer tutor.
How often do tutors meet with students?
Most sessions are 2 hours once a week, or twice a week for 90 minutes. It depends on when you have time to meet a tutor.
How long will it take me to learn?
You may stay in our program as long as it takes for you to achieve a 5th grade reading level. For some, this may be a few months; for others it may be years. Tutors will go at a pace that is comfortable for you. They are here to help you not to rush you through.
When and where will I meet with my tutor?
Tutors and students always meet in a public place such as the Literacy Council, public libraries, and churches. You must decide on a place that is convenient for you, and we will find a tutor who can meet at the same time and place.
Is there anything else I can do to help me learn faster?
Yes, there is a lot you can do on your own. Use the skills you are learning in our program. Do homework. Use our computer lab as often as you can. Practice, practice, practice.
What if I cannot come to class?
Call your tutor as soon as possible. If you cannot reach the tutor, call us at 704-226-1425.
