One-on-One Tutoring

One-on-One Tutoring is at the core of our programs and provides our adult learners with the focused attention they need to learn to read. This services is available for both ABE (Adult Basic Education) and ESL (English as a Second Language) learners.  Trained volunteer tutors meet with their students at times and places convenient for both. Students progress at their own pace.

Small Group Instruction

Small Group Instruction allows English as a Second Language learners to focus more on their English communication skills while also improving their reading.

Computer Lab

Our Compute to Literacy project gives our students the opportunity to use computer technology to improve their literacy skills. We have a nine-station computer lab as well as six laptops that tutors may check out for offsite tutoring. Our software library includes The Alphabet, Ultimate Phonics, Rosetta Stone, IBM’s Reading Companion, Reading Horizons, and more. Regular computer usage reinforces what our students are learning during their tutoring sessions while also giving them a new life skill.

Tutor Training & Continuing Education

Tutor training is an integral part of our program. We offer five 10-hour trainings each year in which up to 20 volunteers are given the skills and tools needed to be an effective tutor. In addition, we offer quarterly in-service workshops to give tutors fresh new ideas on how to enhance their tutoring sessions.

Life Skill Workshops

We also offer a number of life skill workshops for students, providing a wealth of information on a variety of topics including Financial Literacy, Emergency Preparedness, Employment in the United States, and Citizenship Preparation. In 2009 we are launching a Literacy for Life project in which students may gain important information on health and well-being.

Literacy for Life

In 2009 we are launching a Literacy for Life project whereby students will increase their reading and English literacy skills while also gaining important information on health and well-being. Additionally, we host routine health screenings by the Health Department and will continue to assist immigrants in using their improved literacy skills as a mechanism to improve their understanding of health related issues.

Customized Programs

We also offer convenient work-site tutoring, as well as conversation groups, and book clubs. Call us about your specific needs.
