How can I
become a
student?
|
Call
704-226-1425
or
704-226-1429
(in
Spanish). We
will
schedule an
orientation
and
assessment
at our
office and
will also
find out
about your
goals.
|
|
|
|
|
How much
does it
cost?
|
Tutoring and
classes are
free. Books
are also
free, but
students are
asked to
make a
donation to
our Book
Fund.
|
|
|
|
|
How fast
will the
lessons go? |
Tutors will
go at a pace
that is
comfortable
for you.
They are
here to help
you not to
rush you
through. |
|
|
|
|
When can I
start? |
You may
begin coming
to our
computer lab
as soon as
orientation
and testing
are
complete,
but you may
be on a
waiting list
until we can
match you
with a
volunteer
tutor. |
|
|
|
|
How often do
tutors meet
with
students? |
Most
sessions are
2 hours once
a week, or
twice a week
for 90
minutes.
It depends
on when you
have time to
meet a
tutor. |
|
|
|
|
How long
will I
study?
|
You may stay
in our
program as
long as it
takes for
you to
achieve a 5th
grade
reading
level. For
some, this
may be a few
months; for
others it
may be
years. |
|
|
|
|
When and
where will I
meet with my
tutor? |
Tutors and
students
always meet
in a public
place such
as the
Literacy
Council,
public
libraries,
churches,
etc. You
must decide
on a place
that is
convenient
for you, and
we will find
a tutor who
can meet at
the same
time and
place.
|
|
|
|
|
Is there
anything
else I can
do to help
me learn
faster? |
Yes, there
is a lot you
can do on
your own.
Use the
skills you
are learning
in our
program. Do
homework.
Use our
computer lab
as often as
you can.
Practice,
practice,
practice. |
